Rereading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone with a fan

Posted July 27, 2015

Happy Monday to all of my fellow Potterheads! Welcome to another addition of Disneypotterlock, where I talk about all things Disney, Harry Potter and Sherlock!

I can’t talk about the magical world of Harry Potter without mentioning the books. I was one of the Potterheads who read all of the books and saw all of the movies. I loved both versions of the franchise, but the stories and characters have begun to mush together in the last few years. So, I decided to reread the books, starting with Sorcerer’s Stone!

Rereading this book really brought me back to the first time I sat down and read the books in elementary school. I had read the first chapter before, but it didn’t grab my attention. Once I finally got past the Dursleys, a whole new world was opened to me. Ironically, the book I’m rereading is the one from third grade that I borrowed from my teacher (shhhh) all those years ago! If you want to join me, grab your book and let’s begin!

First off, I must say that the first chapter is infinitely more interesting whenever you get past the boring life of the Dursleys. I forgot that there were wizards and owls everywhere, celebrating the end of Voldemort. But my favorite part is the fact that McGonagall is a still giving her stern looks over her glasses as a cat. The sass never ends! Also, the fact that Hagrid got to Privet Drive on a motorcycle given to him by Sirius Black gives me the feels.

What a sad life Harry leads…then it comes! “Mr. H Potter/ The Cupboard under the Stairs/ 4 Privet Drive/ Little Whinging/ Surrey” and so begins the adventure of the letters. The scene in the movie with the letters flying out of the fireplace was great but I think the book version with them inside the eggs is my favorite! And Hagrid’s entrance is a classic of course. But there’s no “Yer a wizard Harry, You’re a hairy wizard”! It’s all a Tumblr created lie!!!!

Anyway, onto the first trip to Diagon Alley. I forgot that Harry actually meets Malfoy first in Madam Malkin’s robe shop! And of course, the wand scene is a classic. Now, let’s fast forward to the trio meeting at last! Ron and Harry bonding over sweets is the best. I’m pretty sure Ron wasn’t the only one who flipped out when Harry bought all of the candy on the train. And of course, Hermione enters (with Neville) in search of a toad. I know she joins the group a bit later in the story (Chapter Ten: Halloween…yes I have read it a couple of times) but I feel like this was the start of the trio.

The last thing I’m going to be talking about today is the first introduction of Hogwarts. Hagrid leading the way to the castle we all wished we called home to meet Professor McGonagall before the Sorting. Ghosts wander the halls and scare the newbies, especially Peeves! (I’m still upset he wasn’t in the movies.) And finally, the Sorting. I’m sure all of us wish that we could be sorted into our respective houses by the Sorting Hat!

What’s your favorite part of the Sorcerer’s stone that I’ve covered so far? Post it on your favorite social media, and don’t forget to use #disneypotterlock! Stay magical, my friends!
