The Mystery of the Christmas Special

Posted July 29, 2015

Good day my fellow Sherlockians! Did you miss me?

Sorry, I couldn’t resist!

Welcome my friends to another addition to Disneypotterlock, where I talk about all things Disney, Harry Potter and Sherlock! Today I wanted to talk about my theories for what the Christmas special will be about.

As many of you know, series four is being delayed again (sniff), so this Christmas special is the only taste of Sherlock that we will get until around 2017. Needless to say, I’m excited about the idea of Benedict and Martin in the Victorian era! This sneak peek released for the Victorian episode shows just how dapper and awesome this episode is going to be. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NEVgqykJjrg)

I have only have one issue with this clip, which is that there’s no tease as to what the episode will be about! I have a few theories, but I thought I would also consult my resident Sherlock expert (my sister). She knows a lot about the books, which will help us in our guessing game.

My main theory is that the story used will be The Blue Carbuncle. To those unfamiliar with the books, this story is about a gem that is found in a stolen Christmas goose by the Commissioner Peterson. The expert also agrees. She believes that the reason they would do the Blue Carbuncle is because it is one of the original and canon stories that takes place at Christmastime. However, she doesn’t think that team Moftiss (Moffat and Gatiss) will follow the storyline directly.

I agree with her because Moftiss is pretty good at tweaking and taking inspiration from Doyle. I mean, a Study in Pink has a tweaked plot point that makes it different from a Study in Scarlett, but it’s still awesome!

What does my resident expert theorize, you ask? She says that they could pull a Study in Pink and edit some of the plot points. “There could be a goose and a blue carbuncle, or it could have the same name and take a completely different physical form” she said.

All theories aside, I can’t wait for this episode. It will be great to see Benedict and Martin embodying the look of previous incarnations of Sherlock and Watson, while still adding their own flair to the characters. Also, this is one of the first times Moftiss actually wrote together on the same episode for Sherlock. Surely the writing will be great!

What are you looking forward to seeing? Any theories that I might’ve missed? Let me know by posting your answer on Facebook with the hashtag #disneypotterlock!

Stay nerdy my friends!
