Your fall wardrobe looks warm and toasty, but what about your home? Thanksgiving is right around the corner, so it’s time for your crisp white plates, cool linen tablecloth, and sea-glass tumblers to go into hibernation. When writing a shopping list for Thanksgiving dinner, don’t forget that what the food is being served on matters, too. Read on for some tablescape inspiration.
The Room
The beach house feel your home has been embodying all summer could use some warming up. One way to accomplish that is to switch out your cotton curtains for velvet ones. The dining room will immediately feel cozier. Just as you would layer on fall clothes, add layers to your home such as draping a wool throw over the couch so guests falling into turkey comas can snuggle up. Incorporate rustic accents like wood bowls and woven baskets, filling them with Thanksgiving-themed gourds and seedpods.
The Table
When it comes to hosting holiday dinners, buffets are always best. Celebrate the bounty you’re about to eat by displaying a cornucopia of colorful fruits and veggies. While orange and brown are the traditional Thanksgiving hues, opt for an equally festive fall color scheme, such as plum or sage, for your tablescape. But such rich tones should be reserved for the tablecloth, placemats, and napkins (folded creatively if you’re crafty!) so as not to overshadow the dishes. Pillar candlesticks add the finishing touches without taking up too much space.
The Details
With your vibrant tablescape taking center stage, food should be presented on classic white buffet chargers and platters, the exceptions being slate and wood cheese boards. Think vertically as well as horizontally, stacking cake stands so that food can be piled high. Gold flatware is warmer than silver, so switch out your daily utensils with festive, gilded ones. This detail can be extended to the bar cart, where gold-rimmed glasses are set out along with a pitcher filled with a Thanksgiving-themed cocktail such as spiced apple cider.
This season, your design skills should garner as many accolades as your cooking does. Happy Thanksgiving!
