At the 87th annual Oscar ceremony, there were winners and losers. Oh, and some great films were celebrated, too. But, let’s face it, a large portion of the audience tunes in solely for the fashion; to revel in the gorgeous gowns and deride the worst dressed. Some eveningwear color trends emerge too, often trickling down into the dresses that the rest of us will soon see in stores. We’ve gathered the best and brightest Oscar gown trends.
Red Hot
Shoulderless and crimson proved hotter than the color of the red carpet itself. “Gone Girl” nominee Rosamund Pike shone in a high-slit number by Givenchy. Meanwhile “50 Shades of Grey” star Dakota Johnson wore a Saint Laurent off the shoulder fire engine red dress and model Behati Prinsloo wore a breathtaking Armani Couture gown that proved to be an evening highlight.
White Hot
Not to be outdone by the blaring alarm of red, bridal white hit the Oscars this year with an unusually large number of starlets deciding to go ivory for the ceremonies. Highlights included Julianne Moore’s Karl Lagerfeld shoulderless, floor sweeping creation and Lupita Nyong’o in a gown covered in 6,000 pearls. A most unusual, but hardly unexpected, entry was the famously creative Lady Gaga wearing Parisian Azzedine Alaia’s full-skirted gown. Pretty and perfect in white were also Oscar nominee Marion Cotillard in Christian Dior Haute Couture and svelte, post-baby Jenna Dewan-Tatum wearing Reem Acra.
Newly Nude
Nude and pink also made their feminine appearances. There was a bosom-bearing Jennifer Lopez in an Elie Saab gown, which, now infamously, made her trip. And Jennifer Aniston again shoulderless in a Versace dress which provided enough movement to allow her to pinch Emma Stone’s bottom. All the while, Gwyneth Paltrow pulled off a pink, bowed shoulder Ralph & Russo, and Viola Davis wore a champagne, ball gown silhouette by Zac Posen.
Black Magic
Fear not, traditionalists. Formal black still made the scene on the likes of sophisticated Sienna Miller who wore an Oscar de la Renta sheath and Meryl Streep in a suit-like creation.
Envelope Please
In summary, the basics trends of the night included sparkles galore sported by talent like Nicole Kidman and Anna Faris. Also, somewhat a first, animal prints on Naomi Watts and Chloe Moretz as well as Keira Knightley and Jamie Chung, who boasted glamorous but whimsical texture and shine.
