For more than a decade now, casual menswear has been ruled by denim, though the khaki chino deserves an honorable, mention. But this season, soft, luxe corduroy, a retro favorite, is making a comeback. In its new incarnation, both thin and thick wale, corduroy can actually cross over the line from casual to work wear, even dipping its lined toe into the more formal side of fashion.
Pants
In earth tones, burgundy, grays and olive greens, the wonderful cord rides again. Thinner and with a narrow silhouette, the new corduroy pant gives almost a velveteen look.
Shirting
Take your boring button up, warm it up and make it super supple in corduroy. Wear it tucked or untucked.
Suits
In a head-to-toe, suiting look, corduroy shakes off any scruffy connotation and becomes completely suave. Still, it’s corduroy, so even in suit form, it’s completely at home paired with sneakers.
Outerwear
Try sprucing up a traditional short, zippered jacket by opting for one in beige corduroy. It’s a tad warmer than canvas and much more stylish. Or, take the same approach with a corduroy Army-style peacoat.
Accessories
Look for caps brimmed in corduroy and even corduroy fedoras. Desert boots look especially new done up in corduroy instead of suede. Even the good old necktie and carryall are getting in on the corduroy action.
Give corduroy another chance. It’ll be a “whale” of a time!
