How to Wear Patterned Legwear

Righty Tighty!

Posted October 21, 2015

Break up the monotony of winter this season with a whimsical play on legwear. Patterned tights and leggings are more popular than ever and can be worn with everything from sweaters to belted shirts to plain old tees and even short shorts. Designers like Tommy Hilfiger, Rodarte and Proenza Schouler marched designs such as lace, open weave fishnet and geometric styles down their fall runways. Here are our favorite ways to wear legwear patterns and even a few dos and don’ts.

Show your Legs

If you’re wearing a pattern, you might as well show off your legs. It’s great to be able to wear the season’s shorter skirts with a nice, warm pair of tights that are also of-the-moment. It’s all about styling, so don’t be put off if you are plus size or even petite. This trend works for you ladies, too.

Go Wild with Pattern and Color

Though the best choices this fall are black pattern on pattern or wide fishnet, creative designers such as Jeremy Scott even showed outrageous yellow tights. So have fun and put a little va-va-voom into the dreary months.

Let Your Tights be the Statement

Pay attention to the rest of your outfit and let your legs do the style work. If the tights are colorful and patterned, pair them with a simple black dress. Also, don’t over-accessorize. Keep your jewelry and trimmings simple.

Add Boots

Boots look fantastic over patterned legwear. Scrunch them down, wear ankle-hugging styles or pull them all the way up over the knees with just a bit of pattern peeking out. Just don’t try open-toed styles with patterned tights. It never looks right.

With all the wondrous choices in tights, you’ll be sure to have the upper leg this fall.
