How to Make Outdoor Dining Easy

Grill and chill…

Posted June 27, 2016

We know entertaining outside sounds a bit daunting, but it’s much easier (and more fun) than you think. When the weather is warm and the days are long, moving your dinner party outside and enjoying the company of your neighbors, friends, and family makes summertime that much sweeter. Fire up the grill and follow these four simple tips for how to make outdoor dining easy and memorable.

Pass on Paper

Although paper products like cups, napkins, and plates make cleaning up a breeze, the summer breeze itself can turn your outdoor dinner party into one wild goose chase. Instead of flimsy paper, choose cloth or linen napkins in a soft color or, alternatively, in a bright colored print. Not only will they not blow away and decorate your yard in unwanted litter, but they are more eco-friendly and elegant.

Simple Settings

Don’t stress out about your table not looking “Pinterest-worthy” enough. An outdoor summer dinner party does not require anthing too fancy or over-the-top; in fact, a more airy and laidback ambience is much better for outdoor dining and casual conversation. Instead of a formal bouquet as a centerpiece, go for more of a rustic, garden party feel and arrange just a few single stems in artsy vases, different sized water glasses, mason jars, or a ceramic pitcher (realistic faux flowers work great). Or, choose small pots of mini succulents for a chic, earthy vibe. Add some different votives, candles, or lanterns to warm up the mood (and also to ward of bugs).

Mix Things Up

Just because you are hosting a get-together doesn’t mean you have to be all matchy-matchy with your dishes. It’s actually quite stylish to mix-and-match your place settings, glassware, and flatware. Mixed metals are especially on trend, as are bohemian mixed patterns and vivid colors. Don’t worry too much about things clashing; the key is to have a playful color palette or theme to tie your whole table together.

Take a Seat

Don’t let your number of lawn chairs dictate your guest list. Get creative with seating and squeeze in some extra spots by adding in different chairs from different parts of your home (remember, mixing-and-matching is okay!). Outdoor cushions add extra color and coziness. Don’t have a big enough table? Throw an al fresco picnic instead. Lay down quilts, blankets, and lots of pillows and cushions and enjoy a comfy, summery gathering on the grass.

And remember – don’t take planning an outdoor summer soirée too seriously. Sit back, get grilling, and just have fun!
