Nothing says summer like a barbecue, and the 4th of July is the perfect occasion to show your patriotic side by decorating in red, white, and blue. But think beyond stars and stripes to festive decorations that are investments long after Independence Day and can double as home décor once the fireworks have fizzled out.
When decorating, the first step is always deciding on a color scheme. Fortunately, the holiday has figured that out for you. But rather than splurging on products that feature a red, white, and blue motif, choose different items in each color and layer them together yourself. That way you won’t limit their use to national days of observance. For instance, blue folding chairs, pillows, vases, and candle votives make for refreshing, nautical outdoor décor that will come in handy throughout the season.
As for the flag’s other two colors, is there anything more classic than a picnic table covered in a red-and-white checkered tablecloth? We think not. Of course, if you aren’t planning a sit-down dinner, consider casually draping a red-and-white quilt or throw over your outdoor sofa. Red and white is also a winning combination in the kitchen, as everyday white plates can be pepped up when placed next to bright red placemats, serving trays, glasses, and napkins.
Stars and stripes take center stage on the 4th of July but choosing the right decorations can mean the difference between a festive party and an Election Day poll center. While anything with blue-and-white or red-and-white stripes can be used year-round (bench cushions, table runners…you name it), you can get creative with stars. Let guests spear pigs-in-a-blanket with star-topped cocktail picks, slurp punch from star-studded straws, and let star-shaped balloons loose into the sky. When the sun sets and the fireworks show is over, plug in string lights with alternating red, white, and blue light bulbs to set a starry-eyed mood.
Last but not least, don’t forget to fly the American flag!
